In accordance with new Michigan law, school districts across the state are required to adopt and enforce policies restricting student use of wireless communication devices during the school day. In response to this requirement, Cheboygan Area Schools has updated its student cell phone and wireless communication device guidelines for the 2026–2027 school year.
The purpose of these requirements is to reduce distractions, support student engagement, and help create an environment where students can focus on learning and positive interactions with their peers and staff.
Cheboygan Area Schools Guidelines
Grades PK–6: Students may not use cell phones or other personal wireless communication devices during the school day.
Grades 7–12: Students may not use cell phones or other personal wireless communication devices during instructional time. Use is permitted during lunch only.
Exceptions will be made when a device is medically necessary, required by a student's IEP or Section 504 Plan, used for an approved educational purpose, or otherwise specifically authorized by school administration in accordance with district policy and applicable law.
We recognize that cell phones and other wireless devices have become an important part of everyday life. Our goal is to implement these requirements in a clear, consistent, and reasonable manner while meeting the requirements established by the State of Michigan.
We appreciate the cooperation and support of our students, families, and staff as we work together to minimize distractions and keep the focus where it belongs—on student learning, safety, and success.

Please take a moment to complete the annual Education Benefits Form, which is required for all families. Completing this form helps ensure our students and schools continue to receive the important programs, resources, and benefits they need.
The form can be completed online at cheboygan.familyportal.cloud by clicking “Apply for Benefits.”
We appreciate your time and attention to this important matter.
